Dear Members,

As a not-for-profit financial cooperative, SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union is owned by you, our Members — each of our Members, equally. SchoolsFirst FCU stands against racism, inequality and injustice.

I have spent the past week talking with Members, and with many of our teammembers. Listening. Learning. Coming to terms with the work we have to do as a Credit Union. And as a nation.

The discrimination and racism that led to the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and many others is unacceptable. We must stand together against injustice, and work with each other to build a future of which we want to be a part.

The issues that brought us to this moment are not new. Tragically, they have been a longstanding part of history in our country and others. Sadly, they have been allowed to fester and to cause needless suffering for too many, for far too long. Unfortunately, it might be easy for some of us to continue to ignore them. But we can’t let that happen. It’s time for all people to have difficult conversations, to examine the “why” and the “how” of the underlying inequality, injustices and racial discrimination that led us here.


SchoolsFirst FCU was born of the credit union movement in support of the educational community. The credit union movement was founded on values that include diversity, equity and inclusion. We say that we are “here to serve and not to judge.” We remind ourselves of our core philosophy of “people helping people.” We need to draw on these values and our own Credit Union Values now more than ever. We do not take sides in political debates, but this is bigger than politics. This is about promoting human dignity for all.


While our organization cannot solve these challenges alone, we are starting with ourselves. Today you can find our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Promise on our website. This statement outlines the steps we are taking to ensure our Credit Union lives up to our promise for both Members and teammembers. We also just instituted new training for our leadership to examine and confront unconscious bias. These steps are already bringing about many productive and heartfelt discussions within our organization.

We need to be there for one another. We need to continue to listen and learn. We need to be willing to have difficult conversations and be comfortable with being uncomfortable. We need to open our minds and our hearts.

I will be doing my part, as a global citizen and a humble servant-leader to our Credit Union’s many Member-owners. This message is not meant to be the final word. I ask that you stay tuned for more opportunities to engage in this vital dialogue.
