ANNUAL MEETING OF THE MEMBERSHIP
87th Annual Meeting of the Membership
May 18, 2021 at 5:30 p.m.
The 2021 Annual Meeting of the Membership will include highlights of the past year and insights for the year ahead. The Nominating Committee has nominated four Members to fill four vacancies on the Board of Directors and a fifth Member to complete the unexpired term of a Director who retired. Additional nominations for the Board of Directors may be made by petition in the manner set forth below. If no nominations by petition are received, a ballot election will not be necessary.
Nominations from the floor at the Meeting on May 18, 2021 will not be entertained unless unforeseen events prior to the election result in an insufficient number of candidates for the vacancies. Election results will be announced at the Meeting. No other formal business will be presented at the Meeting.
The Nominating Committee nominated Renee Hendrick, Dr. Marc Ecker, Matthew Schulenberg and Eric Padget to fill three-year terms following the end of their current terms, which expire in 2021; Douglas Sato, who was appointed in 2020 to fill the unexpired term of Adam O’Connor, which expires in 2022, will stand for election to complete Mr. O’Connor’s remaining term.
Nominations by Petition
Nominations may also be made by petition. Any Member who is at least 18 years of age is permitted to be a nominee. The petition must contain the name, signature, address and last 2-digits of the Member number of at least 500 eligible and valid Members. Additionally, nominations must be accompanied by a brief statement of qualifications, biographical data, and a signed statement from the nominee that they are agreeable and will serve if elected. Each petition must be limited to one nominee and signatures from Members should be affixed to a petition on or after October 1st in the year preceding the Annual Meeting. The petition must be received by the Nominating Committee at SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union, P.O. Box 11547, Santa Ana, CA 92711-1547, or delivered to the Office of the President no later than 5 p.m. on February 5, 2021. Petition forms for the 2021 Meeting are available upon request from the Office of the President.

2021 Board of Directors Nominees
Renee Hendrick, Board Member
Mrs. Hendrick has been a Volunteer with SchoolsFirst FCU for more than 14 years beginning on the President’s Forum in 2006. She also served on the Board of Managers for SchoolsFirst Insurance Services, LLC, as well as on various Committees over the years. She joined the Credit Union Board in 2015, and currently serves as Chair of the Finance Committee. Mrs. Hendrick served on the Board for the Orange County Education Foundation and witnessed firsthand the generosity of the Credit Union and their outstanding relationship with educators.
Mrs. Hendrick has more than 26 years of educational experience at the Orange County Department of Education, where she is currently Associate Superintendent of Administrative Services. Her educational background includes attending the University of Redlands. She is certified as a Chief Business Official by the California Association of School Business Officials (CASBO). For over 15 years, she has been very involved with the CASBO. She has served on numerous committees and has held numerous leadership positions within CASBO, including State President in 2010. She was an instructor in the USC School Business Management Certification Program and a mentor in the FCMAT/CASBO CBO Certification program. She also serves on the Board of Directors of SELF (School Excess Liability Fund) as Chair, which manages excess liability claims for schools across California.
Mrs. Hendrick lives in Corona with her husband, Tim.
Marc Ecker, Ph.D., Board Member, CCUB
Dr. Ecker joined the SchoolsFirst FCU Board of Directors in August 2006. Prior to that, he served on the President’s Forum in 2000, the Member Relations Committee in 2002, the OCTSO Board in 2004 and the Finance Committee in 2006. Dr. Ecker retired as Superintendent of the Fountain Valley School District in December 2014, after more than 18 years at the helm of the district and now serves as a full time faculty member at CSU Fullerton in the College of Education, Department of Educational Leadership. He is a partner in Leadership Associates, an Executive Search and Leadership Development firm in California.
Dr. Ecker is a former state president for the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA). He served as a member of the Governor’s Superintendent Advisory Task Force that worked to craft the new school funding plan known as the Local Control Funding Formula. He continues to serve as a member of the Southern California Superintendents Association, serves on the Board of the Fountain Valley Schools Foundation and is an active member of the Fountain Valley Rotary Club.
Dr. Ecker was awarded ACSA’s Lifetime Service Award in May 2015. He is active within the Jewish community, involved with the Orange County Jewish Federation, the American Israel Political Action Committee (AIPAC) and his Synagogue, Temple Bat Yahm.
Dr. Ecker and his wife, Linda, live in Fountain Valley. They are the proud parents of two daughters and one son, and grandparents to six grandchildren.
Matthew Schulenberg, Board Member, CCUB
Mr. Schulenberg has been a Member of SchoolsFirst FCU since 1995 and a Volunteer since 2007. He began his Volunteer service at the Credit Union by joining the Inland Empire Advisory Board. After several years of service, he joined the Board of Managers for SchoolsFirst Insurance Services and then in 2016, the Credit Union Board of Directors.
Mr. Schulenberg has served the educational community for over 25 years as a mathematics teacher, school-site and district-level administrator. He is currently the Assistant Superintendent, Administrative Services at the Apple Valley Unified School District, where he is responsible for all operational aspects of the District; including finance and budgeting, transportation, maintenance and nutrition services. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Redlands and a master’s degree in Educational Administration from National University. He is an active member of the California Association of School Business Officials (CASBO), completed the FCMAT CBO Mentor Program, and is a CASBO Certified Chief Business Official.
Mr. Schulenberg resides in Apple Valley with his wife, Trana, and their three children.
Eric Padget, Board Member, CCUB
Mr. Padget began his Volunteer service with SchoolsFirst FCU in 2006, serving on the President’s Forum, along with the Finance and Risk Management Committees and the SchoolsFirst Insurance Services Board of Managers, LLC. prior to joining the Credit Union Board in 2019. Mr. Padget has over 29 years of experience working in public education both in California and Nevada at the elementary, middle and high school levels and is currently a High School Administrator with the Garden Grove Unified School District. He has also been involved at the state and national level working with legislators to influence policies and laws that promote excellence for public education and once on behalf of SchoolsFirst FCU in Washington, D.C. when the big banks were promoting legislation that would harm and limit the credit union activities.
Mr. Padget also has served as a Trustee on the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) Board of Education since 2008. His wife, Robin is a Middle School Principal, and their children have attended PYLUSD schools. He was actively involved in the community as a volunteer coach and board member for youth sports and the Placentia-Yorba Linda YMCA Parent/Child Program. He earned his Bachelor of Arts, Multi-Subject Teaching Credential and his Master of Science in Educational Leadership from California State University, Fullerton. Additionally, he has completed the California School Boards Association Masters in Governance Program.
Douglas Sato, Board Member
Mr. Sato was appointed to the SchoolsFirst FCU Board of Directors in October 2020, after serving as an Associate Director following the merger with Schools Financial Credit Union in January 2020. At Schools Financial Credit Union he served on the Board of Directors since 2015, and Treasurer since 2017. He also served on the Executive Committee, and the Asset/Liability, Cybersecurity and Savings, Loans, Products & Services Committees. In 2017, he served on the Nominating Committee as well as various other committees. Mr. Sato became a Member of Schools Financial Credit Union in 1981, while working for Los Rios Community College District.
Mr. Sato brings a strong financial background to the Board of Directors, having spent his career working as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and auditor for a number of businesses including educational and financial institutions (banks and credit unions). Educational institutions he worked with include, Los Rios Community College District (LRCCD), University of the Pacific, and federal VEA programs at community colleges throughout California. During 35 years of owning his own CPA accounting firm, he has worked with numerous small and medium sized business owners and managers to navigate the accounting and tax complexities of business ownership. He has recently retired and enjoys working as a consultant.
Over the years, Mr. Sato has had the pleasure of serving on the board of trustees/directors of many non-profit and for-profit companies, many times as the Treasurer of the board. His experience also includes serving on his church Finance Committee and board of trustees.
Mr. Sato was born in Fresno and grew up in Sacramento, where he lives today. He attended California State University, Sacramento and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting. He and his wife, Beverly, have been married for over 40 years and have three adult children.
