Legislative Education

Credit unions are under an unprecedented level of attack from others in the financial services industry. These attacks are intended to capture the attention, and the hearts and minds, of elected officials at all levels of government even to the leaders of the smallest city.

For better or for worse, government policies will continue to impact the future of the credit union movement. The extent to which we can influence the politics of financial institution regulation will determine how much control we have over our destiny.

It takes a powerful force to influence state and federal policies on credit unions. It takes commitment, knowledge, perserverance, action and time.

Credit union Members should not shy away from becoming politically involved. Credit Unions are built on the idea that people, working together, have the desire and intelligence to better their own lives and the lives of their fellow human beings. This philosophy is also the essence of democracy.

To be active in the world of credit unions is to be active in the world at large, including the world of politics, where our nation exercises its democratic traditions. Our dedication to our Members is our defining characteristic. It is our strength.

In our democracy, legislative advocacy is a series of checks, balances and compromises. It is not always about absolutely winning or losing, but it is always about taking action. Some of the ways to take action are so important that they bear repeating: get updates on issues and make yourself familiar with them; write letters to your representatives and always thank the people who help you. Ask if you can return the favor, leave your business card, and send a thank you note.

The most precious asset of the credit union system is its Members driven by their convictions. This dedication is the source of our energy. It also is the primary force powering our legislative action program.
